Oregon Pines 99s Corvallis
Compass Rose
photos below!
Oregon Pines 99s loyally turned out on an event-laden Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24, to paint the Corvallis compass rose. In a nutshell.....We used about 44 gallons of paint. The whole project, including survey and prep time, took about 46 people/hours.
In early September, our official Oregon Pines surveyor 49 1/2 Ty Parsons and Louise checked the orientation of the rose with a solar observation, then ripped out weeds and swept away debris. Friday afternoon on the 23rd, Debbie Origer, and Louise and Ty Parsons did some outlining.
On Saturday, Bev Clark, Kim Lansdon, Linda Leach, Trish and 49 1/2 Ron Hanna, and Ty and Louise got it all done by 2:30 PM. The project was a re-do of a unique compass rose painted nearly single-handedly by Corvallis pilot Jill Jackson many years ago. Jill had created a CVO logo in bright gold in the center of the blue and white rose. This rose is 80 feet in diameter. In spite of temptation to use a typical "99" in the center, we kept local tradition and followed Jill's original design. The City of Corvallis donated the paint, which was delivered right to the spot by airport manager Dan Mason. In spite of a super busy schedule, Dan was very supportive of the project.
The airport has been busy with construction activity, though it is winding down as we head towards winter. Be sure to check local NOTAMS and the CVO AWOS. But by all means, fly in sometime and have a look! The rose is located at the northeast end of a third closed runway, near the approach end of runway 27. The remaining portion of old runway is now a sort of racetrack used by police for practicing CAR maneuvers. On Saturday they were having a Police Academy and did a few spins and steep turns near our work. You never know what excitement can be found on an airmarking project!
