The Light of Christmas is a selection of The
Literary /Guild, Doubleday Book Club, and Book-of-the-Month Club.
The story begins:
"High in the mountains, where the clouds like on
the ground like great cotton balls, is the Christmas town of
Noel." Alexander, a young boy, longs to become The Keeper
of the Flame--the one whose job is to keep the bright flame of
Christmas glowing in the center of the village. The one who brings
the truest gift will be chosen.
Alexander's mother is sick. She cannot travel with him into
the village, so she packs food for the journey, gives him an
extra cloak, and sends him on his way. Along the way he sees
what appears to be a cloak, lying in the snow. He must hurry,
yet--he cannot pass the cloak by. It is a good thing, too, since
the "cloak" is a man lying in the snow.
Stopping to help costs Alexander dearly. By the time he reaches
the village, he has no gift to offer--or does he?
This is a heartwarming story with an unforgettable takeaway
message, illustrated with warmth and color to light the holiday
spirit.
