- Originally
published in 1951 as one of The Childhood of Famous Americans
Series (Bobbs-Merrill Company), Juliette Low, Girl Scout Founder
is now part of The Young Patriots Series. Florrie Kichler, creator
and publisher of the new collection, describes it as "a
chronicle of the best of our past presented to the children who
are the best of our future."
-
- The revamped
series offers children an opportunity to meet some of America's
unsung heroes and heroines--people who overcame obstacles to
follow their dreams, and encouraged others in the process. The
series adds a more personal touch to the lives of well-known
adults, by showing readers what childhood was like in their days.
-
- Juliette Low,
for example, was raised in post-Civil War Georgia, but did not
fit the usual mold of a southern girl. Unlike her older sister,
Nellie, she was outdoorsy, and would much rather scurry up a
tree than learn how to sew. Nellie loved pretty dresses, and
kept her appearance "spick and span," but "Daisy"
couldn't have been more thrilled than the day Grandma and Papa
presented her with Fire--a highspirited horse to call her own.
-
- Young readers
ages 8-12 will witness her first day of school. They'll follow
her on a carriage trip north to New York, where her grandparents
meet her. The family rides to Daisy's grandparents' house under
"warm buffalo robes."
-
- Celebrate
the first time Daisy sees a snowfall. Listen along with the other
children to Grandpa's fantastic stories. Witness what life was
like after the war, and how the family returned to their home.
-
- By story's
end, children will also discover the colorful story behind the
founding of the scouting program for boys and girls. Daisy's
spunky beginnings pay off, as she helps establish a program that
will change and mold young lives for decades to come.
