Can you remember the very first book you ever read all by yourself?

Imagine all the good stories you'd have missed, if not for gifted authors who followed their dreams and let ideas take flight; or illustrators whose heads were filled with images needing a home.

This is a spot to pay tribute to authors and illustrators who help keep our bookshelves ever-changing.

Meet Kathryn Lasky

Kathryn Lasky has written more than seventy books for children and adults, including fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Many of her readers are surprised to learn that she was classified a "reluctant reader" in school.

She remembers a night when she was about ten years old. She and her family were taking a night drive with the top to their car down. The sky was filled with "wooly clouds," blocking out the stars. Kathryn turned to her mom and said that it looked like a "sheepback sky." Her mother liked the description and said that she should become a writer.

What if her mom had dismissed her description as silly, or dumb? Do you think Kathryn would have ended up writing all those books?

Words have the power to make or break us. An encouraging word can make a huge difference in a life.

Explore some of Kathryn's award-winning books, and remember the story of how she began. Maybe there's a writer in you, too--just waiting to get out.
