My Cat Copies Me

by Yoon D. KwanKane/Miller, 2007

Ages 4-8

A little girl loves her cat, but the cat refuses to be held. He tags along behind her, hiding under a table and under her blanket when she's scared. The cat snuggles close and purrs.

"My friend, my cat, copies me," says the girl.

She longs to lose her fears, so she starts watching the cat...very carefully.  And she decides she'll stretch her horizons, just like the cat stretches its limber body. She will learn to climb and see into the darkness, and not be afraid anymore. Bright illustrations depict imaginative scenes of home and the Korean neighborhood where the girl and her cat live.  Kwan has written a book for anyone who has ever loved a cat, or for anyone who's just plain curious.

Anne Frank: The Young Writer Who Told he World Her Story

by Ann Kramer / National Geographic

Ages 9-12

Anne Frank's diary carries readers back to a dark period of history. Set in World War II, this is the narrative of a young teen whose famous story rocked the world.  In her journal she writes about her friends and family; joys and sorrow.   Anne's tender, candid entries show her deepest fears as we step into her world. Nazi Europe has become a place of fighting for one's survival, and of wondering whether even the closest neighbors and friends can be trusted.  Persecution, betrayal, and ultimately, hiding from the Nazis robs Anne and her family of happiness, yet she writes entries that show joyful moments as she purposefully celebrates the ordinary.

Her story is already known to millions, but this new book by Ann Kramer introduces her in a way that will inspire readers to take up their pens and write.  It is beautifully designed with illustrations, sidebars of little-known facts, and of course--excerpts from Anne's beloved diary, which had become like a dear friend with whom she could chat. A timeline runs along the bottom of the pages, showing what happened at each turn. This book is so much more than a glimpse into those troubled times; it's a keepsake of a young woman who rose above her circumstances and recorded her thoughts and hopes in a way that outlasted her brief fifteen years here.

Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter

by Susan Goldman Rubin

Harry N. Abrams, Inc.

Ages 8-12

Children might not be familiar with Andy Warhol as much as their parents, and this book aims to change that. Warhol translated modern culture into works of recognizable art--paintings of Coca-Cola bottles, Campbell's soup cans, and stars like Marilyn Monroe. He also painted portraits of endangered species such as the Bald Eagle, African elephant, and the Black Rhino.  In his quirky style, he decided to paint the rhinos blue.

He was hailed as an artistic genius far and wide, yet he didn't seem to understand what the uproar was about.  All he knew is that he painted soup cans into his paintings because it's a part of Americana he understood.  It was everyday life to him, because everyday for lunch, he would eat Campbell's soup.

This book by award-winning Susan Goldman Rubin, introduces children to Warhol's life story--his rise from an ordinary artist to fame. Young readers will learn about his childhood, his work as a commercial artist, and how he came to embrace so many kinds of art expressions. Archival photos and full-color replications of his best-known paintings add to the drama that was his life.
