About the Corvallis
Environmental Center
Organizational Vision
The Corvallis Environmental Center is a key player in the creation
of a sustainable community - one in which the environment, the
economy and social systems are connected in a way that meets
the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs. As a result of these efforts,
the concepts of sustainability will be widely understood and practiced
by individuals and organizations, and Corvallis will be known for its
commitment to an ecologically sound future.
Mission Statement
The mission of the CEC is to provide learning opportunities and
technical outreach to Corvallis area residents and businesses, giving
them tools to pursue ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable
practices.
"Teaching this ecological
knowledge - which may be called 'principles of ecology,' 'principles of
sustainablity,' 'principles of community,' or even the 'basic facts of
life' - will be the most important role of education in the next century."
Fritjof Capra
Guiding Principles
1. We will strive to reach a wide audience by maintaining
a non-judgmental attitude toward potential patners and program participants.
2. In designing and implementing our programs, we will pay close attention
to the economic and social needs of people in the Corvallis area, and
will ensure that our programs are accessible to all members of the community.
3. Whenever possible, we will work with other organizations in corvallis
to foster symbiotic realtionships with them in working toward the common
goal of education.
4. While advocacy is an important tool in promoting sustainable practices,
it is not the mission of CEC to use this strategy as a means of accomplishing
our goals.
5. Sustainability education not only advances social scientific and ecological
literacy; it provides vision of hope, opportunity and a sense of place.
