s Varnish below the waterline

Can I put marine varnish below the waterline?

---

From: Bob Rickard

The question I have is on the Marine Varnish I was planning on using for the final coat on my 17 ft. Micmac. Every Marine Varnish I have found says it cannot be used below the water line of the boat. If this is true what can I use for a final coat of varnish below the water line?

Thanks, Bob Rickard

Bob,

I think the varnish manufacturers put that advice on their cans to protect themselves from fouling problems that might develop if varnish were permanently immersed in water, which a canoe is not. Z-Spar Captains Varnish, Z-Spar Flagship Varnish, and Interlux Clipper Clear are varnishes for coating epoxy that are recommended by System Three.

Best of luck with your project, David
