Abenaki line drawing?

---

From: James Nordyke

The dotted lines extending below the solid lines on the forms for #s 3&8, 4&7, 5&6, are somewhat confusing to me, I am not sure whether to extend the form to the bottom of the dotted line, or to stop at the solid line.

David replies: It's funny those lines got left on the drawing. They simply show the original outline of the station forms that I made oversize. It's probably a good idea to have some form extending below your intended sheer line.

James: There is no bottom distance on 6R, 7R, and 8R. Could you instruct me as to the distance from center for these, I am assuming that they will be the same as the forms without the "R".

David replies: No, they do not correspond. See the next answer. For the 14' Abenaki, the not-to-scale drawing in the lower left corner gives you the correct distances from the center of the strongback for that boat.

James: What do the 23 1/2", 53 3/4", and the 73 3/4" refer to? They are next to 6R, 7R, 8R.

David replies: It's been a long time since I drew these. I had to study the drawing for a while to figure this one out. I think those numbers are the distances for 6R, 7R, and 8R when used to build an 18' canoe, and they replace not form 6, but forms 7, 8, 9, and 10. That means the strips span a distance of 30" without an additional form between 6R and 7R, which is stretching things a bit to say the least, but I must have done it that way. For a 16' Abenaki, the distances would have to be found by experimentation.

Happy paddling,

David
