Okapi

Okapi are a member of the giraffidae family, along with the only other members, the various giraffes. It is one of the rarest animals in the African tropical forest. It lives in the rain forests of Zaire and the Republic of the Congo.

They stand about 5 ft tall at the shoulder and their necks are slightly longer than that of a horse. Like the giraffe, they have a very long tongue that allows them to pluck leaves, buds, and small branches from trees. Their tongues are so long they can even clean their ears with them! They spend their lives in small family groups and are sometimes found solitary.

Joy has known about them since she was a little girl and has always been curious about them.
