November, 2008 Program

On Tuesday November 11th at 7:00 PM, Mark Akimoff will present "Once in a Century -- the 2007 Wildflower Bloom in Death Valley" Mr. Akimoff is a horticulturalist with wide interests in perennials, alpines and native plants. He has managed several private and public gardens in the Portland area, including rehabilitating gardens at the McMenimen Edgefield Estate. He recently relocated to Salem, where he and his wife Cindy are establishing Illahee Nursery, specializing in unusual bulbs and perennials. The talk will be held at the Eugene Garden Club, 1645 High St. and is sponsored by the Emerald Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society. The meeting is free and open to the public. Door prizes and refreshments follow. Call 345-9103 with questions.

"Revitalizing the Rock Garden "

hosted by the Columbia-Willamette Chapter, DoubleTree Hotels, 1000 N.E.Multnomah St. (Lloyd Center), Portland, OR 97232.

This meeting will include the National NARGS Annual Meeting and celebration of NARGS 75th Anniversary. Speakers to include Carlo Balistrieri, discussing Innovative Stonework, Rock Gardening in Small Spaces; Ian Young, Our Garden in Scotland and Choice Bulbs in the Rock Garden; David Sellars, Chaos in the Rock Garden; Rex Murfitt, Rock Gardens in North America, Then and Now; John Lonsdale, New Enthusiasms; Fred Weisensee, New Ideas from Dancing Oaks. There will be a huge sale room with many vendors . The registration form will be included with the fall Rock Garden Quarterly. Local gardens will be listed for visiting. A hike in the Columbia River Gorge is being planned for the Monday following the WWSW.


This calendar is generally under construction and new events are added sometimes at the whim and inspiration of the group. The public is welcome to all Emerald Chapter events! Events include refreshments and also frequently include plant door prizes.

     Directions to the Sebring Rock Garden The public is most welcome! This is an excellent opportunity for the plant-lover to see gardening in a unique setting.
 Sunday, September 7, 1:00 PM   Sebring Garden in Alton Baker Park (see link for directions above right)  Garden Potluck Party and Walkabout. Come and celebrate the rennovation.
 Tuesday October 7th 7:00 PM   Eugene Garden Club, 1645 High St.  Talk by Loren Russell. "Pitchers and gentians and orchids, oh my!--building and planting a garden bog."
