Rock Garden Construction Techniques: Using the Small Utility Cat and a Very Handy Tool

There is quite an element of suspense as a huge prism or block that weighs hundreds of pounds is suspended off the end of the bucket, sometimes wrapped in a heavy strap. Small patient movements are necessary to position the rock judiciously before actually setting it down. When set down, it is then free to roll, shift, or otherwise do its own thing. Care is also taken with each rock, large or small, to see that no significant air pockets are created.
A Handy Tool
Much time is diligently spent settling rocks in and tamping and packing all
space between then with crushed rock and sand. Note the very handy tool
that Ali Sarlak (on the left) is holding. It is a heavy digging bar with a
wedge on one end and a tamp on the other.. These are available at farm and
ranch supply stores, garage sales if you are lucky, or at equipment rental
facilities. Heavy boots, watchfulness, and of course an extra nimble effort to
keep feet and other body-parts out of any possible path of destruction all help
to promote safety.
