FEATURED SPEAKERS
Panayoti Kelaidis, Denver, Colorado “The Rock Garden as a Laboratory” and “Old Friends” Often dubbed the Guru of rock gardening in North America, Panayoti is the recipient of many awards including the Wherry, LePiniec and Award of Merit from NARGS, and Award of Excellence from the Garden Clubs of America. As Curator of Plant Collections at Denver Botanic Garden, he has built the Rock Alpine Garden into a showcase. Panayoti has collected plants on several continents and introduced them widely to American horticulture through the PlantSelect Program. Gwen Kelaidis, Denver, Colorado “Living with a Rock Gardener” Editor of Rock Garden Quarterly from 1990–2000, Gwen is a botanist and garden designer whose taste for “buns and cushions” is legendary. A much sought-after speaker, Gwen’s return to WWSW after many years’ absence will be a treat
John Lonsdale, Exton, Pennsylvania “Choice Bulbs” and “Pushing the Limits—Growing Challenging Plants in the Open Garden” Note to on-line viewers, be sure to visit John's garden page. Edgewood, the Lonsdale garden John, a highly successful grower of alpines (primarily Androsace, Dionysia, Primula, Saxifraga and hardy bulbs) under glass, received the AGS Gold Medal in 1995. He then moved from England to Pennsylvania, where he began work on “Edgewood”, 1.5 acres of woodland, sunny slopes and sand beds, where he now grows an incredible range of alpine bulbs, daphnes and wood-landers, including hardy orchids. Almost all are grown in the open, with summer cover provided only to a few highly moisture-sensitive plants such as Oncocyclus and certain Juno Iris.
Art Kruckeberg, Seattle, Washington “Plants Grow by Geological Consent” Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, Art has had a long career in plant ecology, concentrating on plants growing on serpentine soils. This has intertwined with his lifelong interests in horticulture and conserva-tion. He is a recipient of the NARGS Wherry Award and chaired the Northwest Chapter. Hi s books include the invaluable Gardening with Native Plants in the Pacific Northwest, Natural History of Puget Sound Country, and the recently published Geology and Plant Life. With his late wife Maureen, Art created a 4-acre garden and arboretum, now the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. R ock gardeners, wherever they live, strive to grow plants from all continents and all temperate-zone habitats. Most rock plants are wildlings, often with spe-cial habitats or narrow ranges, and success in growing them starts with an understanding of their adaptations.
Oregon Speakers
David Mason, McMinnville
, “Evolutionary Adaptability—from Wilderness to the Garden” David grew up in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and received his RHS diploma at Wisley. After a stint at Wakehurst, he managed Longstock Water Garden in Hampshire, where he co-authored The Complete Book of the Water Garden. In 1994 he and his wife Susie started Hedgerows Nursery, which currently lists over 1000 varieties of plants, many from English sources. David Hale, Portland, “From the Top Down” A retired physician and inveterate world traveler, David is the author of “The Botanical Traveler” series in Rock Garden Quarterly and an expert on South American alpines. David and his wife Donna grow a wide range of alpines, many from their own seed collections. They garden both in Portland and at the nearly frost-f ree Oregon coast.
Ernie & Marietta O’Byrne, Eugene “Garden Niches: from Woodland to Desert” Ernie and Marietta are proprietors of Northwest Garden Nursery. Their large, exquisite garden contains thou-sands of species from alpines to specimen conifers and is frequently pictured in national garden publications such as Horticulture, Sunset, Martha Stewart Living, and Fine Gardening. Marietta has also written for several of those publications. Ernie has held many NARGS offices including Book Service manager, board member, member of the Executive Committee and chapter chair.
Loren Russell, Corvallis “The Element of Desire: Beauty, Botany and Philosophy” Currently NARGS Recording Secretary, Loren has written several articles in Rock Garden Quarterly and contributed chapters to the NARGS books North American Bulbs and Rock Garden Design and Construction. He was a NARGS National Speaker in 2001 and led the 2003 NARGS Expedition to northeast Oregon.
Tanya Harvey, Fall Creek "Adaptations of Oregon Native Plants". Tanya is an artist and photographer. Her paintings graced the covers of the 2002 issues of Rock Garden Quarterly and her photographs have appeared in RGQ and the AGS Bulletin. She is the current editor of the Native Plant Society of Oregon’s Bulletin. When not in her garden she can usually be found roaming the Cascades in search of interesting plants and wildlife.
